Greenwich Waterfront Transit

    Greenwich Waterfront Transit will:
  • Deliver cost effective regeneration support in a national priority and EU Objective 2 area.
  • Address social exclusion problems providing improved transport links to poorly served housing areas.
  • Complement the Docklands Light Railwat and link directly to the Jubilee Line extension.
  • Bring significant road traffic reduction and safety benefits on major highways.
    A tram-based system is forecast to have high levels of demand, attracting 16 million passengers per year.

    It is relatively easy to deliver Phase One
  • GWT is a small, low risk easy starter scheme, which is easily extendable and is the quickest scheme to get operational.
  • 98% can be on segregated routes ensuring very high reliability.
  • It includes over 6km of off-highway route acquired at no cost to the project.
  • Only a few properties require compulsory purchase powers and compensation.
  • Low utility relocation cost - £25 million on only 30% of route length. Attractive to the private sector - less than a qzuarter of the cost to be financed from the TfL public purse. A 25% local contribution is achievable from developer support.
